About Charlotte
As long as I can remember I’ve had a paintbrush or pencil in my hand during any spare moment, and I’ve been drawn to being outdoors from a young age. My main inspirations have always come from animals and nature. I grew up by the sea, with dogs, cats, chickens and horses, spending any spare time walking on the beach or riding. Naturally these all soon became my main inspiration for my artwork.
During the school holidays my Grandfather, Peter Chapman, a self taught artist and sculptor based in Norfolk, taught me the basics of animal portraiture. I immediately fell in love with the process and from there, my work progressed to selling my own range of pet and animal portraits in 2013 under the name ‘Charly Art Portraits’. I am proud that I am now able to follow in my Grandfathers footsteps and produce unique pieces that capture people’s four-legged family members.
Alongside my pet portraiture work, my landscape and seascape collection is a combination of my other great loves; The sea, the sky and the huge rolling countryside around me. I am a big walker and have taken lots of inspiration for my paintings whilst trekking along the South West Coast path in the UK, and during holidays in Cornwall. Having grown up in Norfolk right on the coast, I fell in love with the huge expanse of sea and sky there and so I am always drawn to wanting to paint these dramatic scenes.
Now based in the Cotswolds, and regularly painting from Cornwall (spending long working holidays in St Ives multiple times a year), I feel very lucky to have direct access to so much green space and rolling ocean to complement the skies that I adore to paint. I use all medias, from watercolours to oils and acrylic and absolutely love getting lost in my work. I’m at my happiest when experimenting with different mediums to capture the raw essence of nature on canvas and paper. My work is intense, colourful and full of joy.
